» Canon Point: Ryner's coming in from a similar canon point to Sion's; relative to Ryner specifically, he's recently been kidnapped, and woke up afterward in an unfamiliar place wearing different clothing.

» Gender: Male

» Age: 20

» Orientation: Unknown/effectively asexual. Ryner shows zero sexual attraction toward anyone (and no sexual inclinations period, in fact) in canon. He's oblivious to the growing attraction his companion Ferris shows him, and when another female friend confesses to him and kisses him, the only thing on his mind is the concern she might suffocate him in the process. He similarly boredly dismisses the "advances" made by Sion (actually a misunderstanding) and rejects an enthusiastic male "fan" of his. Having been told from childhood that he's an inhuman monster that doesn't deserve to live, he's cut himself off from humanity as much as he can, and until Sion breaks through doesn't even seek friendship from others. Sexuality isn't just unimportant to him, it's not part of his life at all. He fails to show even a hint of interest in anyone, no matter how straightforward they may be. And while he is stuck with a reputation as a womanizer and pervert, that supposed reputation is simply the result of a magnification (part deliberate, part inadvertent) of the innocent actions of a very young child. Ryner as an adult shows no interest in any of the people he encounters, female or male, nor does he show any hint of desire for a sexual relationship. And while it is possible that canon may yet pair him with someone, thus far there's been nothing across approximately 40 novels to indicate Ryner has any sexual interest whatsoever in any other character in the story--even friendship remains a challenge for him to understand and accept. Because of the culture of the world he comes from, he will tend to lean more toward women for the purposes of loosening his collar in Amat, but any arrangements will be made in the sense of practicality, and likely treated in a rather utilitarian manner.

» Personality: Known as "The Greatest Magician in Roland," and "The Black-Haired Devil," one might expect Ryner to be a bold, forceful personality, or a scholarly academic. One certainly wouldn't expect a lazy, worthless, good-for-nothing layabout who would rather be napping than working. And yet, that's what Ryner is, and what he wants others to see. He wants to remain someone not worth noticing, who doesn't stand out, who isn't important enough to bother with or spend time around.

Apparently lacking in any sort of work ethic, Ryner prefers to spend his days napping. At the military academy he attended, he did his best to skip classes to sleep, put in no effort into studies or combat training, and had no interest in pursuing high marks or a promotion. When he was later imprisoned for a time, he reacted without distress, instead looking at it as a way to take unlimited naps and be as lazy as he wants. When released and set to work searching for artifacts, he accomplishes the task only when pressed by his companion, and when he returns from that task to work alongside Sion, he complains endlessly about the amount to be done. All he wants to do is nap the day away.

This is the side of him he wants people to see, however, because people don't care about or get close to a worthless layabout. Under the lazy, unmotivated surface is someone who has lived his life believing himself a monster that shouldn't be allowed to live. Ryner was born bearing a destructive curse, one that drives those around him to turn on him at best and call for his death at their worst. So to protect the world from himself, as well as to save himself from being abandoned time and again, he makes himself someone with whom others won't want to associate.. If no one comes close, he believes, no one will be harmed.

He didn't earn his nicknames for nothing, however; what closeness he lacks with people, he has found in studying magic, and is content to lose himself in research--when he isn't napping, that is. In spite of his general lack of motivation, he is in fact a magical genius, both in his own skill and as a result of the curse he secretly bears. That genius helped him attain the moniker of "Roland's Greatest Mage." The curse's destructive attribute, however, along with his time as part of an elite team of assassins, contributed to the nickname of "Black-Haired Devil." And though he deliberately failed in his missions and outright refused to kill others, it was still clear that he was well-trained and would be extremely dangerous, if not for his insubordination. Even with his self-imposed disconnect from the humanity that regards him as an outcast, he steadfastly holds life as a precious and valuable thing, and cannot bear to kill. He loves humanity in spite of everything he's been put through at the hands of others, and even in his isolation wishes to see the world improved, not to darken it through death and destruction.

Even with all his efforts to distance himself from people, however, Ryner finds himself unable to resist the efforts of fellow student-turned-king Sion, and later the skilled swordswoman Ferris. The two break through his self-imposed isolation, rescuing him from his chosen path of loneliness and giving purpose to his life beyond hiding away until he self-destructs under the power of his curse. Under their assurances that his life has value, he lets his barriers against companionship drop and accepts the two as friends. That friendship becomes so deeply rooted that, even when Sion attempts to kill him, Ryner still cannot view him as anything but the closest friend he's ever known. Facing the possibility of losing the very few people who matter to him, he actively fights his own lethargic nature to attempt to in turn save them, but it's an ambition reserved purely for the sake of those friends. When it's not for their sakes, he remains an unmotivated layabout, still interested more in afternoon naps than hard work.

» Appearance: Ryner is tall and lanky, with dark eyes and hair; canon describes both as black, but they're depicted as dark brown in all artwork. He tends to carry himself in a slouched, lazy manner, and generally looks like he just rolled out of bed (which he probably has). His right arm is a paler color than the rest of his body, due to it being a replacement given him after he lost his arm in a battle; he also has a small mark on the left side of his chest, similar to a tattoo. Overall he tends toward tired and sleepy expressions and postures unless motivated by some outside force to react, and is inclined to make himself appear as unremarkable and harmless as possible, to avoid unwanted interest.

*a sleepy-looking brown eye appears in the communicator, moving around, as though the person holding it is studying the device intently*

Is this thing on? Helloooo... is anyone listening? I really don't know where I am or what's up with this collar thing, and I'm probably not the first...

*the image pulls back as he finally stops his examination of the device, revealing he's already dressed himself in a black-and-red tunic and cape; he runs a hand through hair that's still an unruly mess*

Uh, anyway, if someone can tell me what's going on, that'd be great. Just--*yawn*--wake me up when you get here, this place has really nice beds.

» "amatomneslogs" Third-Person Prose Entry:
(Note: Ryner has not actually ever slept with Sion, or shown any interest in doing so. He has, however, more than once snuck into Sion's chambers to "borrow" his bed.)

The man in the bed yawned deeply, rolling onto his side without even opening his eyes. "Just five more minutes, okay?" he muttered to no one in particular, curling up under the sheets. The dream that had awakened him had been... strange. Not necessarily worse than the terrifying scenes of death and destruction that woke him at times, but unpleasant regardless. He'd done his best to eliminate those desires; it was less bothersome to never have those urges when you could never act on them, after all. Pushing the whole mess out of his mind as just another strange dream, he yawned again and dozed off.

Some time later, he stretched out on his back and yawned again, eyes still closed. "Ahhh~ this bed is great. It's even nicer than Sion's. I should enjoy it as long as I can, I'll get up later." He was so used to defending his desire to keep sleeping at this point that he didn't even notice when no one answered before he fell asleep again.

It was late in the day when the man finally sat up, yawning and rubbing at his eyes. "Aaaaahhhhh... that was a really nice nap." He finally opened his eyes, and then... just stared.

To an outside observer, it may have seemed that he was staring at the opulent room itself, but that wasn't it. His gaze was focused much closer, on the very air itself. The clear, clean air unlike any he'd ever seen, holding not even a trace of magical energy. Worse, he couldn't activate the special ability of his eyes, the one granted by the Demon that should have allowed him to see the composition of everything around him. The initial shock worn off, he jumped out of bed and ran to the mirror on the other side of the room, leaning close against it, staring into his own eyes. "...Nothing?"

For the first time, he had normal eyes. No iridescent tears, no vermillion pentacles. Just ordinary brown irises staring back. "How can this..."

It was about then that he realized his earlier "nothing" applied to more than just his eyes.

"AAAH WHERE ARE MY CLOTHES?!" He spun around, frantically pulling the sheet from the bed and wrapping it around his waist. Covered, he finally took a moment to look around the otherwise unoccupied room.

"...Where am I? Ugh, don't tell me I got kidnapped again. Can't everyone just leave me alone? At least whoever did it this time gave me nice accomodations." He crossed to the window, still holding the sheet at his waist, and looked out over the unfamiliar landscape.

"Nope, nothing I recognize." He raised a hand to rub at the back of his neck. "Guess I should find my..." Huh. That was unfamiliar. Between the shock of losing both his ability and his clothing, he'd failed to notice until now the band wrapped around his neck. He hooked a finger inside and tugged, but it didn't give. Curiosity piqued, he returned to the mirror for a better look.

It was a simple band, relatively narrow and made of soft black leather. He couldn't find any opening or seam on it, and no matter how hard he pulled against it, it didn't loosen or break. Sighing tiredly, he gave up his fight against it, at least for now, and returned to his look around the unfamiliar room. The look of the place was far more elaborate than anything he'd seen in the past--and he'd spent enough time being bullied into work in Roland's palace to have seen some elaborate decor. It wasn't a familiar style, either, but he hadn't been to every nation, so that wasn't so strange... right? It was easier to just tell himself that than dwell on it for any length of time. More important was finding some clothes... "Ah, there they are... same ones as before, too. This kidnapper's not nearly as creative as the last one... what's that?"

On top of his neatly folded black-and-red clothing, barely noticeable until he'd walked over to them, was a small black device. He picked it up and looked it over. Glass? And some kind of smooth material, not quite metal... "Aah, I'll figure it out later. Or maybe not." He tossed the device over his shoulder onto the bed, and the sheet after it, before setting to dressing himself.
