didnotchoosetobe: Ryner looking sleepy (It's too early dammit)
Character Name: Ryner Lute
Canon: Legend of the Legendary Heroes
AU/OC/Previous Game: No
Age: About 20

Appearance: Ryner is tall and lanky, with dark eyes and hair; canon describes both as black, but they're depicted as dark brown in all artwork. He tends to carry himself in a slouched, lazy manner, and generally looks like he just rolled out of bed (which he probably has). He tends to make himself appear as unremarkable and harmless as possible, to avoid unwanted interest.

Cause of Death: Unknown (ongoing canon)

Impact of Death: Resignation, mainly. Ryner's a character who's lived his life knowing he's probably going to die young, and while he doesn't want to die, and in truth would prefer to live, it's a fate he's lived with his entire life. Once it's happened, he's not going to worry too much about how or why anymore, and will be more concerned with Sion's presence in Thusia than his own.

Character Info: Ryner Lute, the Greatest Magician in Roland, the Black-Haired Devil... no one would suspect those were names given to a lazy, worthless, good-for-nothing layabout. And yet, that's what Ryner is, or at least what he wants people to see. Someone not worth notice, someone who doesn't stand out, who doesn't make a name for himself and who isn't important enough to bother with.

Born bearing a destructive curse known as Alpha Stigma, from childhood Ryner's been labelled as an inhuman monster not fit to live. The curse allows him to analyze and duplicate any magic he sees, but at the cost of ultimately driving him to lose control and destroy everything around him before killing himself. All who learn of his curse reject him and leave him alone, so he builds up walls to protect himself and isolates himself from the world around him. By making himself into someone not worth notice, he reinforces those barriers, both keeping himself safe from the world, and the world safe from himself.

And then Sion walks into his life. Sion knows Ryner bears the Alpha Stigma eyes before they ever meet, and seeks him out anyway. He treats him as a human being, not as a monster, and though he initially threatens to reveal Ryner's secret, he's true to his word to keep it under wraps. Unfortunately, that secret is revealed regardless, and again wishing to protect the world and isolate himself, Ryner willingly submits to imprisonment. He passes his time with study and sleep, writing a lengthy manifesto on building a world based on peace (and afternoon naps). However, he refuses to submit to the threat of execution, and when removed from prison attempts to run, until he learns that he's being pardoned by his old friend Sion, now king.

Under Sion's influence, his walls begin to weaken. Paired with swordswoman Ferris to hunt for ancient relics, his walls weaken further when she too learns his true nature and continues to stand at his side. Before he knows it, he realizes he has true friends, people he can depend on... until he learns that Sion has issued orders for his execution. And because his walls have crumbled, that knowledge pains him and drives him to run away. He allies himself with another "monster," one with grand plans to save as many Cursed-Eye bearers as possible. Yet Ferris pursues him, reminding him of his humanity and assuring him he can come back to his friends safely. In spite of the betrayal he felt, he never stopped caring for either, and agrees to return.

Unfortunately, things don't stay peaceful. And on a rainy night, he faces the ultimate betrayal when Sion, crying, attempts to kill him. An event both of them somehow knew was inevitable, though that knowledge made it no less painful to either of them. The event cuts Ryner deeply, though perhaps not in the way most would expect. Because when Sion found the upper hand in their fight, he was unable to strike a fatal blow and instead had Ryner imprisoned. Escaping with Ferris, Ryner realizes that while he's been slacking and leaving the weight of the world to others, Sion's shouldered a terrible burden. And that to save him, Ryner will have to work hard to find an answer. But to save his dearest friend, the man who saved him from a life of loneliness, no effort is too great for even a lazy, good-for-nothing layabout.

Abilities (after Powercap): As their basic powers are similar, I'm using Sion's powercap as the basis for Ryner's. Both use magic in the same way, thus Ryner likewise will find it easier to cast basic magic spells due to the prevalence of serei/spirits in Thusia from all the nature, but it will be a powered-down version of his magic (mechanically, it can be due to a difference in the essence of serei in Thusia compared to Menoris). In addition to basic magic, Ryner also has the ability to analyze, duplicate, and modify any magic he sees; for Thusia, this will be powered down by making it opt-in for the players of other magic users, and cases where the other player opts out will be a failure of Reed's ability to analyze the magic. His godmode of analyzing and undoing everything is a bit much, however canonly he won't use the unmaking power, and if he were pushed into a corner where he would try it, it will fail. The ability to see how to unmake things is not overly useful without the counterpoint of actually unmaking them, and likely won't even come into play, but should it, a random chance of failure may be added if needed.

Items Brought In: Nothing but clothing; he comes in after being kidnapped and stripped of all his belongings.

Survey: (While he doesn't lie, Ryner will tend to deflect and evade on questions that pry too much into his secrets.)

Introduce yourself in a few sentences. Ah, can it just be one? That sounds like too much work. My name is Ryner Lute and I'm originally from the kingdom of Roland, isn't that enough?
Describe yourself physically. Really I'm nothing special and don't really stand out.
What was your childhood like? It really wasn't anything very important. I grew up as an orphan like a lot of kids in Roland did in those days, and then when I was old enough went off to the military academy.
Who is most important to you, and why? Ahhhh? Sion, of course, even after everything. He's still my best friend. Ferris is really important, too, though, even if she hits me with her sword too much.
What's your biggest pet peeve? People keeping me from taking afternoon naps.
Do you consider yourself an optimist or a pessimist? Why? Ahh, those both sound like too much trouble, but I guess I'd say I hope things work out for the best. If I'm actually going to make the effort I'd really prefer not to fail.
Where, or how, did you learn your most important skills? That's not really important.
Do you think world peace is possible? I hope it can be.
Do you tend to argue with people, or avoid conflict? Arguing's too much trouble.
What turns you on the most? Ahh?! What kind of question is that?!
Anything else you'd like to say? Nah, I'd rather just take a nap.
